Leaders in Earth and Environmental Science

The Leaders in Earth and Environmental Sciences(LEES) is an exciting
collaborative fieldwork and research project that will give students in Years 10-12,
and their teachers, the opportunity to work alongside scientists in identifying
important data critical to sustainable catchment management.

The project will involve staff from the Australian National University, University of
NSW and University of Newcastle working with our partner schools (Bega, Eden
Marine and Monaro HS)on research of sensitive coastal lakes and waterways on the
Far South Coast of NSW. Key government and NGO partners (NPWS, Southern
Rivers Catchment Management Authority, Landcare, Bega Valley Shire Council) will
use the research information for catchment management and to inform the local
community on what is happening in their local environment.

A key component of the project is the professional development of teachers to
improve the quality of teaching in Earth and Environmental Sciences (E&ES). The
project will build capacity in our local schools to develop the high quality skills and
learning outcomes needed by scientists of the future.

The innovative features of this project are:

•Use of computerised Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning
Systems (GPS) by students and teachers in fieldwork activities.
•Mentoring of high school teachers in E&ES
•Mentoring of school students in careers and research in E&ES
•Establishment of a strong network of universities, schools and natural resource
managers with a culture of collaboration to enhance student learning.
