Environmental ScienceMay/June 2010Fieldwork for Stage 2 and 3 students! This program was designed to address aspects of the Science and Technology K-6 syllabus. Stage 2 students walked between sites in Bournda National Park while Stage 3 students travelled to the fieldwork sites by pushbike. Stage 2 students from several local schools started out their visit to Bournda EEC with a Fungi/Termite walk to a rotten log where they were introduced to the wonders of this small world of decomposition and life. With the help of a digital microscope they took a closer look at the abundant life at home on, in and around a rotten log. After lunch they were busy exploring and investigating in the soil and leaf litter - they were searching for minibeasts. As part of a magnifying minibeasts activity students carefully collected minibeasts, which were photographed with a digital microscope before the children returned them to where they were found. The students reflected on the day with the help of Google Earth, a great tool to assist them to retrace their step, mapping where they had been in the park and what they had learnt on their very busy and exciting day in the bush. Here are some photos from the day...
Stage 3 students also worked with peers from several schools to conduct their fieldwork at Bournda. They began the day on bikes with a cycle to the Field Studies Hut. From there they moved off in small groups to observe and record weather details and soil composition in the small section of rainforest nearby. The students learnt about the significance of colour, texture, drainage and acidity of soil. They were also given the opportunity to measure and record temperature, wind speed and humidity as they were encouraged to look more closely at weather patterns in the area. Students also participated in a dune study on Bournda beach looking specifically at plant life, dune exposure and dune care. After lunch the students jumped on their bikes and headed to Wallagoot Lake to do some testing of water quality. They ended the day back at the EEC. Get cycling!
