Did you know there are less than 50 hooded plovers left in NSW? Some of that tiny population of birds lives in our area and we can help look after them and other important shorebird species.
Description:
Overall the South Coast Shorebird Recovery Program (SCSRP) aims to:
Assist with the recovery of threatened shorebird species by attempting to curb their diminishing numbers and enhance the breeding success.
Facilitate community involvement in the implementation of these recovery actions
Raise public awareness of the conservation status, habitat importance and biology of the shorebirds
Our efforts are focused on 4 threatened shorebird species – Little Terns, Hooded Plovers, Pied Oystercatchers and Sooty Oystercatchers. These birds breed every spring and summer on the NSW South Coast (on beaches, offshore islands and within estuaries located between Wollongong and the NSW/ Victorian border).
