Department
of Environment and Conservation
DECC is committed to supporting quality
research in partnership with schools and universities. In
2005-6 Max Beukers worked with Bournda EEC on an ASISTM
project. Evaluations showed that students enjoyed his
positive and humorous approach. Max will continue to share
his extensive technical expertise in GIS with students and
teachers highlighting the use of computer technology in
natural resource management.
Contribution of organisation to the project Support with
planning of project with focus on GIS/GPS support. Advice
on handling of fieldwork data and data analysis. Role model
for students as working scientist using GIS and GPS in
earth and environmental science applications. Attendance at
planning day, school visits, fieldwork days and
environmental expo.
Where project activities occur on National Parks estate,
DECC has waived any fees for students participating in
environmental education activities.
Far
South Coast Landcare Association
FSCLA has worked with Bournda EEC on a
number of innovative projects, where landholders and
schools have worked together for positive land management
outcomes. Student youth forums resulted in local students
attending international conferences in Melbourne and
Canberra where they presented information on how they were
working to improve their local environment. FSCLA will
support the proposed project fieldwork and expo activities.
Contribution of organisation to the project FSCLA
Coordinator David Newell will provide expert advice and
support on relating fieldwork activities to "hands-on" land
management decision made by landholders. Assistance on the
fieldwork days and environmental expo day will give the
students an opportunity to see the link between practical
science and practical land care.
Southern
Rivers Catchment Management Authority
SRCMA strongly supports a range of
catchment education initiatives which are being conducted
in partnership with Bournda EEC. This has included previous
SCIPs projects and Round 1 ASISTM and also a program called
"Our Place, Southern Rivers" which Bournda EEC has
coordinated, developing a web based education resource with
case studies on excellence in local natural resource
management projects.
As the peak catchment management body in NSW, CMAs provide
a range of NRM expertise relevant to assisting schools in
this project.
Contribution of organisation to the project The Southern
Rivers CMA has already worked closely with Bournda EEC to
establish a working relationship with ANU staff and
students. This relationship will be extended with the
support of CMA staff working on studies of the Sandy Beach
Creek catchment as part of this project. CMA staff can
provide expert advice on catchment issues, rapid catchment
assessment techniques, use of GIS/GPS and implications of
research for catchment management. CMA staff will
contribute to cluster planning, fieldwork and environmental
expo days as part of this project.
Bega
Valley Shire Council
Derek Van Bracht from BVSC has been
working with Bournda EEC on initiating Coastal Catchment
Research with ANU. BVSC plays a pivotal role in dealing
with landholders and disseminating information about
environmental research to the local community. Linking
environmental management with important local industries
dependent on high quality ecosystem values (aquaculture,
tourism) is an ongoing part of Council programs. This
program represents a valuable source of data for Council
planning and action in local catchments.
Contribution of organisation to the project Provide expert
advice on coastal management issues relevant to catchments
being studied in this project. Community liaison between
teacher associates and property owners. Role model to
students of resource manager working in local government.
Attendance at cluster planning day, fieldwork days and
environmental expo. Support for use of GIS data in Council
management processes.
